LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was unable to muster any offense Thursday in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Triton Baseball Field.
The Golden Eagles managed only five hits and were blanked for the first time this season, 6-0, by UC San Diego. Cal State L.A. (37-11-1, 25-8), ranked fifth in the nation and second in the NCAA Division II West Region, lost for the fourth time in its last five games. UC San Diego (34-19, 23-10) won its fourth straight game. Both teams have already qualified for the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament, which will begin on May 10 at Reeder Field.
Isaac Morales carried a shutout into the fifth inning, but the Tritons broke through for four runs in the inning and tacked on two more in the sixth. That was more than enough support for Triton pitchers Daniel Simmons and Nick Rodieck. Simmons allowed only four hits over six innings, while Rodieck worked the final three innings and gave up only one hit to record the save.
Sean O'Leary pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Golden Eagles. Morales slipped to 9-2 on the season.
Henry Contreras had a two-out double for the Golden Eagles in the fifth inning and Felipe Gallo followed with a single, but Cal State L.A. was unable to score.
Jack Roche, Brian Hernandez, Fernando Franco and Felipe Gallo had singles for the Golden Eagles.
The teams will continue the series on Friday in La Jolla with a single game beginning at 3 p.m. and the series will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader at Reeder Field beginning at noon. Senior Day ceremonies will begin at approximately 11:35 a.m. on Saturday.
